Coder is excited to share our July webinar. Tim Quinlan, Coder’s Senior Technical Marketer, hosts a session with one of our customers, a major global financial services company. Their developer productivity leaders give the before, during, and after of adopting Coder to rein in hardware costs, improve onboarding, and speed up build times. Along with details about their Coder implementation, they talk about the importance of planning and collaboration among developers with diverse opinions.

Old conventions versus today’s realities

The conventional developer setup is a local workstation that potentially hosts everything from the developer tools to the testing environment. But it’s increasingly difficult to juggle dependencies, provide access to high-end hardware, and work around geographical distances. This company faced the usual challenges of supporting conventional developer environments: slow onboarding, increased build times and hardware costs, and difficulties managing diverse teams of developers.

Planning for improvement

A global finance company relies heavily on its technology to build its success. To reduces costs and improve developer experience, the developer productivity team included these efforts in their planning:

  • Total cost of ownership: The cost of development infrastructure isn’t just in the hardware and platforms. Other costs need to be considered, like the support engineers who set up and administer this infrastructure.
  • Collaboration: With diverse teams of developers and their own opinions on developer infrastructure, the developer productivity team made it a point to include senior developers in the conversations about improving the development environments.

Coder consolidates while keeping things flexible

The productivity team combined Coder with Kubernetes to move development environments to the cloud. This combination gives them the flexibility to balance developer and budgetary needs:

  • Multi-regional deployment: Now developers, no matter their geographical location, can seamlessly access their environments.
  • Preconfigured environments: Onboarding is down to hours instead of days.
  • Efficient resource management: Coder and Kubernetes provision and tear down resources based on demand instead leaving them idle and unused. Hardware and platform spend dropped accordingly.

The productivity team is excited about the future with Coder, including the potential for continuous improvement. They look forward to seeing more development teams using Coder on a daily basis.
